Abstract
This paper is divided into two parts. The first part attempts to present a macro-level picture of work participation by women in India as a whole as well as Kerala State and also the extent to which working women are concentrated in the unorganized sector of the economy in India and Kerala. Having given the macro background, we offer on the second part of this paper insights gained on the basis of micro-level studies of the working women in Kerala drawn from the different occupational categories. We concentrate for this purpose, on questions relating to conditions and consequences of working in the unorganized sectors.
