Abstract
Discrimination is practised largely in two ways. One is to pay less to women for the same type of work and the other is to restrict them to low paid unskilled jobs and deny them access to better paid jobs. The first is an open form of discrimination and is usually justified on grounds of so-called productivity differences between men and women. For the second type of discrimination, the usual argument advanced is that there are only certain task which women can best perform. These so- called female jobs or tasks are also the ones carrying low wages.
