Women’s Studies Resources: Nirbhaya - An Index of Newspaper Articles.

Abstract

The last few months have seen a renewed focus on the issue of violence against women. We are regularly exposed to news of extremely disturbing and increasingly violent incidents, including of gang rapes, molestation and sexual harassment of women and minor children through the print and electronic media. Today, the safety of women across Indian cities and, particularly in the capital city of Delhi has become an issue of grave concern. The people have shown their anger against these happenings and developments through various debates and write-ups and have expressed dissatisfaction at how these cases are handled by the police authorities. The media has reflected this popular anger. Some of the literature has pinpointed that patriarchal and male dominated Indian society is responsible for this increased violence against women. Prevalent patriarchal norms and prejudices which contribute to the continued subordination and devaluation of women have also been focused on by many writers as being instrumental in perpetuating this.
