Abstract
It documents the evolving nature and status of SE in India, its historical context and current status. We review the main governmental SE programme at the time of researching and writing this paper, known as the Adolescence Education Programme (AEP), as well as discuss some programmes offered by some non-governmental organisations, for their perspectives, content and impact. The paper examines how SE is currently understood, whether the current programmes are comprehensive, and to what degree they are so. Gaps and challenges have been identified on this basis, with recommendations on possible ways forward.
