Abstract
The Maternity Benefits (Amendment) Act, No. 15 of 2018, passed by the Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, aims to enhance the rights and welfare of working women during pregnancy and after childbirth. This amendment modernizes existing maternity benefit laws, reflecting Sri Lanka's commitment to gender equality and family-friendly work environments. The Act extends the duration of paid maternity leave, granting women increased time to recover from childbirth and care for their newborns without sacrificing income. It also ensures that these benefits are available to all women employed in the private and public sectors, including those working in casual or temporary jobs.
