Gender Based Violence in India

Abstract

Gender-based violence occurs worldwide and is significantly persistent over time. This paper examines the issue of gender-based violence in India in depth. In this context, it looks at the women activists’ struggles around important issues to bring about gender equality and finds that the issue of gender-based violence came into prominence only after the mid-nineteen seventies. A few watershed incidents of rape that served as a catalyst for the women’s movement in India are discussed.
