Abstract
The chapter describes how the women's health programme was initiated, the philosophy and the values that the programme attempted to evoke, the envisioned role of the Women's Health Workers and the kinds of preparation
that needed to be done before the programme could start.
In 1986-87, when the drought was at its peak, and the chulha mistris (the stove builders) and supervisors were beginning to form an effective link between the rural women and the voluntary organisation, SARTHI started feeling the pressures of the local women's demands. SARTHI programme planners thought that it was time to develop more holistic women's programme responsive to the needs articulated by the local women.
