Abstract
In most demographic surveys, respondents are asked to state their desired family size and whether they intend to have additional children. However, the predictive accuracy of their statements about future fertility has been the subject of considerable controversy. The validity of such statements as predictors of fertility has been criticized on the grounds that couples' values change with their own experiences, with their age, and with their evaluation of the socioeconomic and cultural changes taking place around them. Also, discrepancies may arise
between their statements and deeds because of the sheer indifference they may feel concerning the importance of their responses.
