Abstract
With the introduction of female condoms that can be used exclusively by women at the time of intercourse, the conventional latex condom, which is worn over the penis, can now be termed as the male condom. It is expected that the female condom may find a place in the list of the most effective barrier methods by the end of this century. The condom as a barrier method serves a dual purpose - it prevents pregnancy as well as the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDS) including AIDS. The efficacy of the latex condom is reported to be close to 100 percent when used correctly and consistently.
